Wildomar News Reporter: Brenda Sanchez

Welcome back to Wildomar Today! I’m here with Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney serving the Wildomar community. Mr. Bliss, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

Steve Bliss: My Pleasure

It’s my pleasure to be here, Brenda. Estate planning is crucial for everyone, regardless of age or income level. Helping individuals and families secure their futures brings me immense satisfaction.

Brenda Sanchez: For our viewers who may not be familiar with the process, can you walk us through one key step in estate planning?

Certainly. Today, I’d like to focus on the importance of selecting an executor or trustee.

Steve Bliss: The Crucial Role of Executor/Trustee

Choosing the right person or entity to manage your estate after your passing is paramount. This individual, known as an executor for a will or a trustee for a trust, will have significant responsibilities. They will be tasked with locating and inventorying your assets, paying off debts and taxes, distributing remaining assets according to your wishes, and handling any legal matters that may arise.

Consequently, it’s essential to select someone trustworthy, organized, and capable of making sound financial decisions. Moreover, open communication is crucial – discuss your expectations with the chosen individual beforehand to ensure they fully understand their role and are comfortable accepting the responsibility.

Notwithstanding these important considerations, I have encountered situations where individuals named an executor without adequate forethought. In one instance, a client had selected a distant relative solely based on familial ties. Unfortunately, this individual proved unreliable and struggled to manage the estate effectively, leading to delays and complications for the beneficiaries.

This experience highlighted the importance of choosing someone who is not only trustworthy but also possesses the necessary skills and commitment. It’s always advisable to have a backup executor in place, just in case the primary individual becomes unable or unwilling to serve.

Brenda Sanchez: What advice would you give our viewers about selecting an executor/trustee?

I recommend discussing your options with family members and trusted advisors. Consider factors like financial literacy, organizational skills, and personal relationships. Remember, it’s crucial that the chosen individual feels comfortable and confident in their ability to fulfill this important role.

According to a study by Caring.com, 60% of Americans have not named an executor for their estate. This statistic underscores the importance of proactively addressing this step in your estate planning process.

Brenda Sanchez: Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us today, Mr. Bliss!

My pleasure, Brenda. Remember, securing your legacy and protecting your loved ones starts with a well-structured estate plan.
